I'm referring to the institution of the string quartet, that closely-knit group of two violinists, a violist, and a cellist. In 1785, the 30-year-old Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart published six string quartets which 52 he dedicated to his beloved friend and mentor, Joseph Haydn. Throughout the 19th century, the most notorious of these six works was the String Quartet in C major, K. 465, dubbed the "Dissonant" Quartet.
